FIGHT WEEK INTERVIEW: COREY RODRIGUEZ
By Jesse Kelley
June 8th, 2010

This Friday night's boxing card at the Saint Paul Armory looks to be one of those occasions where the undercard has the possibility to up stage the main event. Not to take away from the potential fireworks that Caleb Truax (14-0-1) and Antwun Echols (32-12-4) could produce. But each bout leading to that moment also has the potential to produce a grand finale like show on the local level. Corey Rodriguez (4-1) and Charles Meier (4-1) are one of those featured bouts with the possibility to be something special. Both fighters are extremely confident heading into this Friday's showdown as they bring their fan friendly style's to the ring. Rodriguez celebrated his 31st birthday yesterday and boldly predicted a gift to himself by beating Meier, even stating that he believes his opponent does not belong in the ring with him. Rodriguez spoke openly about Friday nights fight as well as his plans for the remaining 2010.

This is a nice local matchup, you both have identical records. What do you know about Charles Meier and talk about why you feel this is a good match up for you.
He may be 4-1 but he hasn't fought anyone with true boxing abilities. The fight looks good on paper, however Meier will get a taste of what it is like to be in the ring with a trained professional boxer on Friday night.

Talk about your preparation for this fight and whatever you can give us as far as a game plan going in.
We know that Charles does not work hard in preparation for fights. He runs out of gas, has no heart, and he does not belong in the ring with me.

One thing that stands out is the size advantage he has. He is a taller, naturally bigger boxer. Can you talk about the difference in size and what the catch weight will be for this fight?
Originally we wanted the fight at 154 lbs. Charles replied saying that he could not make the weight. So I figured if he could make what he made last fight then he would finally agree, and he did. So the fight is set at 158 lbs. Weight is very important in a fight. With that being said, this is a one time fight at middleweight. I understand Meiers lack of abilities in this game and that is why I am giving him the weight and size advantage.

What do you feel will be your advantages going in?
The only advantage that Meier has is his size! But then again that could work against him as well. As far as all the other advantages... I have the rest including boxing skills, motivation, heart, conditioning, power, and speed.

We recently discussed your wanting to face guys like Javontae Starks, Michael Faulk, Sam Morales, Jon Laboda. Would you like to add anything about those matchups?

Starks wants to fight me but his promotional company representing him knows that he is not ready. Faulk, this guy has already turned down two offers, he will not fight me. Morales, he will never fight me. Laboda, huh? Who? Where has this guy been?

What are your plans after this fight? Are you going to take the summer off, or continue boxing?
I'm not going to take the summer off. I plan on getting this fight over with and moving on to fight Dante Craig in Ohio on June 26th. However we are still negotiating the 6 round fight as they want to make it 4 rounds. After that I plan on traveling east and taking a 6 or 8 round fight in July. I'm still also waiting on an offer to fight Sam Morales, but I doubt that will happen.
