Dave "The Prodigy" Peterson (10-0) won
an exciting 6 round decision over Josh Rodriquez (4-8) Friday
May 21st at Grandma's Sports Garden in Duluth, MN. Peterson controlled
most of the action with flashy combinations and a hard jab. Rodriquez
once again showed a solid chin while catching Peterson with his
own punches, particularly countering rights to the head but couldn't
keep pace as Peterson got sharper as the fight unfolded. Scores
read 59-55 twice and 60-54.
In other action, Hector Orozco (1-1) surprised RJ Laase (4-1)
by keeping constant pressure on the hometown fighter through four
gritty rounds of action. Both men had their moments, with body
shots seeming to be the punch of choice. Orozco punctuated the
final seconds of the fight with a swarm of punches as Laase seemed
to have run out of gas. Orozco would go on to win a split decision.
A rematch has already been set for June 18th.
Tyler Hultin (1-0) had an impressive KO win over Lakendriek Craig
(0-1) in his pro debut. Hultin came out very aggressively, mixing
hard shots to the head with digging body punches. Craid showed
up to fight but was unable to put together much offence because
of the relentless pressure from Hultin. A huge right hand to the
head from Hultin knocked Craig momentarily out cold on the canvas
in round tonewo were the bout was stopped.
Gary "Stone Cold" Eyer (6-0-1) stopped Scott Robinson
(3-9-1) in round two. Robinson came much better prepared for the
rematch between the two as he was able keep up with Eyer for much
of the first round. However, everytime Robinson would land a big
shot, Eyer answered with 3 or 4 of his own. Eyer landed a hard
right hand to the head along the ropes in round two that put Robinson
to a knee where referee Bobby Brunette stopped the bout.
Teammates "Jungle Boy" Zach Walters and Jorey Olson
boxed a four round exhibition. Olson's original opponent was forced
off due to medical issues. Olson kept pace with the veteran Walters
for three rounds as both fighters traded bombs at times. But it
was also clear that both Walters and Olson were holding back a
bit. Walters turned the heat up a notch for the last minute or
so, rocking the larger man's headgear side to side. The crowd
cheered both fighters at the end of four rounds.
In the opening bout, Enobong "The Nigerian Gentleman"
Umohette (1-1) made quick work of Hyacinthus Turnipseed (0-4).
A body flurry dropped Turnipseed to a knee early on. Umohette
followed up with some pitter patter head shots that put Turnipseed
down to his knees again. Referee Mark Nelson waived the bout off
in round 1.
