Bonsante speaks about Brinkley loss, Commission and more!
By Jesse Kelley

Anthony Bonsante went from Contender villain to hero with boxing fans after his highly controversial decision loss to Jesse Brinkley last October in the pairs rematch. Bonsante seemed to outbox Brinkley throughout the bout to most observers that night but when the scores were announced it was Brinkley’s hands that were raised. Victory is sweet but for Bonsante, defeat may actually have proven sweeter in this case. Bonsante walked into the ring greeted with boos but left the arena to cheers that night. Bonsante says that the loss is really a victory to him.
With no definite fights lined up, the 35 year old Minnesotan says he has also been involved in the push for a Minnesota boxing commission. Bonsante sat down with us to discuss the Brinkley fight, what he knows about the proposed Minnesota commission, and also his possible plans for the near future. To read more CLICK HERE. 12/29/05

Boxing Returns to Saint Paul Jan. 19th!

Team Freedom will be promoting a boxing show at the Excel Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota on January 19th. On the card, Matt “The Predator” Vanda (34-1, 21 ko’s) returns to the ring for the first time since taking the IBA Americas Light Middleweight Title from Yory Boy Campas in Minneapolis back in June. Opponents are still being looked at but Marlon Thomas (35-6, 21 ko’s) of Detroit was one of the names that was given as a possibility. Rafael Pineda (38-6, 31 ko’s) will be back in action after a year and a half absence from the ring. Pineda last fought in May of 2004, losing a split decision to Zab Judah. According to Luis De Cubas of Team Freedom, Minnesota’s Anthony Bonsante has been offered a fight with Pineda. Heavyweight Michael Grant (41-3, 31 ko’s) will return to Minnesota to face an opponent tba. Grant won an 8 round unanimous decision over Marcus Mcgee last June in Minneapolis. Julio Cesar “BabyFace” Garcia (34-2, 27 ko’s) is set to defend his WBC Jr. Welterweight Youth title against an opponent to be named shortly. De Cubas also said that a bout between local favorites Zach Walters of Duluth, Mn (13-1, 10 ko’s) and Kenny Kost (10-1, 6 ko’s) of White Bear Lake, Mn will be featured on the card if both sides except the fight. Moreno Goes For Title, A. Litzau Returns!

Minnesota state welterweight champ Jose Leo Moreno will challenge Mike Aranautis for his NABO title tonight in Florida! The card will be telvised on Telemundo but I am not positive Moreno’s fight will be on tv. Here are the weights from Fightnews.com-“Mighty Mike” Arnaoutis 140 vs. Jose Leo Moreno 138.
Allen Litzau returns to the ring for the first time since his fight with Darby Smart also tonight. Litzau (8-1, 4 KOs) will face Carlos Zambrano (8-13-1, 1 KO) in Texas on the undercard of the Rocky Juarez vs Reynaldo Antonio bout. 12/9/05

Quick Results From Fargo

The Minnesota state middleweight title switched hands last saturday as North Dakota’s Butch Hajicek stopped former champ Chris Holt in round six of a scheduled eight round bout. Holt was all energy and aggression from the very start of the bout which was effective at times but it left him open to hard counter shots from Hajicek. “Maddog” Butch took his time and found a home for the straight right all fight long. Holt was dropped on several occassions but always managed to get back up and fight on. After a final knockdown in the sixth, the referee stopped the bout. In the nights semi-main event, NDSU’s Andy Kolle found himself in quite a war with Canadian Kareem Chartrand. Chartrand was always coming foreward and was able to land hard shots to the head of Kolle. They came one at a time for the most part. Kolle landed the better combinations and really started to take over in the final two rounds as he busted up Chartrand. Both fighters were hurt of different occassions and the heart of both fighters showed as both stood for the final bell. Kolle won by UD, scores were 58-56, and 59- 55 twice. Jason Aaker was shocked by a slick Marcus Jones by first round ko. Aaker looked good at the start as he took his time and was starting to find Jones more and more. Jones was moving alot and firing quick shots. Jones landed a hard right to the head that staggered Aaker. Two more right put Aaker down. Aaker tried hard to get up but could not make it by the count of 10. Darby Smart crushed Randy Boleski by second round Ko. Sean Hickman looked sharp tko’ing Monte Fasset in the first round. Travis McCullough tkoed Dion Sgro in the first. Tyler Gould tkoed Ryan Gronvold in the first. And Jesse Barbot stopped Yancy Cueller in the fourth round. More indepth report and much more coming soon. 12/5/05

Litzau dominates Munguia!
From FightNews By Ryan Mickendrow at ringside

Featherweight contender Jason Litzau pounded out a lopsided ten round unanimous decision over durable Miguel Munguia Wednesday night at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen, NJ. Litzau landed the harder shots in a workmanlike performance that netted him a 99-90, 99-91, 99-91 victory which brought his record to 16-0 with 14 KO’s. Munguia fell to 15-5-1 with 13 KO’s.

Litzau Headlines in New Jersey!
By Jesse Kelley

Featherweight Jason Litzau (15-0, 14 KOs) of Saint Paul, Mn will headline against Mexico’s Miguel Munguia (15-4-1,13KOs) on November 30th at New Jersey’s Schuetzen Park in North Bergen. The twenty two year old Litzau was signed by promoter Main Events last July following his exciting split decision victory over former Olympian John Nolasko on Espn2. The bout featured many good exchanges which left both fighters dazed on different occasions. Litzau had to raise himself off the canvas in round seven but went on to finish the final rounds strong, securing the victory. Litzau, now ranked #7 by the NABF and #5 USBA, is ready to face his next test which comes by the name of Miguel Munguia. Munguia, of Mexico City, Mexico has been sparring with world champion Rafael Marquez in preparation for the bout and will no doubt be looking to upset the favored prospect.

Minnesota Boxing Update

Things have been kind of slow in the Minnesota boxing scene as of late. “Rumors” might be a better word for this “update”! First off, here are some late results from last weekends Pro boxing show that took place in Red Lake, Mn on Nov. 19th. In the nights main event, James Wayka dropped former Mohammed Kayongo victim Jerome Elder of Illinois once enroute to a six round unanimous decision victory. Elder ran and clowned for much of the fight, which drew boos from the crowd. NDSU’s Andy Kolle destroyed Canada’s John Mclean in the first round, dropping the usually durable Mclean twice. Powerhouse heavyweight Joey Abell made short work of Canada’s Marcelo Araveno. Araveno tasted the canvas twice before the bout was over. “The Swinging Swede” Matt Anderson had a fun night outboxing Larry Funmaker for four rounds.
Word is that Minnesota state welterweight champ Jose Leo Moreno could be fighting for a title come November 9th. Moreno is seriously considering taking a fight with NABO jr welterweight champ Mike Arnautis in Florida. I will be looking into more details shortly.
Jason Litzau has been training at Buddy Mcgirt’s gym in Florida and will now be heading out to New Jersey in preparation for his match against tough mexican Miguel Munguia. The bout will be the “main event” of the Main Event’s promotion on November 30th. I just interviewed Litzau and should have the story up in the next day or so.
A pro card is rumored to be in the works for the new year here in Minnesota. Names being mentioned to be featured are Matt Vanda and Zach Walters. I have also heard that Shobox could be involved. Again, I dont usually like to print rumors but this could be big! I am in the process of obtaining details and will keep you updated. 11/25/05

Omaha, Nebraska, but semi-adopted Minnesota fighter Grover Wiley is coming off the biggest win of his career against Julio Cesar Chavez on Sept 17th in Arizona. Immediately following the bout Wiley was offered a fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. According to Wiley the Chavez camp is now claiming on their website that Wiley is unable to make weight for the fight and they need to find a new opponent. However, Wiley says that he never said this and can even fight at a lower weight then the 140 that was agreed on. I will be interviewing Wiley on the situation shortly.

Bonsante Loses On Espn

Tony Bonsante lost a 5 round unanimous decision to Jesse Brinkley last Saturday night on Espn. Bonsante seemed to sweep all five rounds boxing behind a solid jab and outworking Brinkley to everybody but the three judges scoring the fight (Raul Caiz 49-46, Julie Lederman and Fritz Warren 48-47). Regardless of the foul decision, the solid showing from Bonsante should open doors for more fights down the road. 10/17/05

Bonsante Seeks Redemption Against Brinkley
By Jesse Kelley

This Saturday, October 15th, Anthony Bonsante will face Jesse Brinkley in a rematch on “The Contender” show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The two first met in May of 2004 as part of the first season of The Contender. Bonsante fought a very aggressive fight and was ahead on all judges score cards through four rounds. Bonsante’s aggression would cost him in the final round however as he left himself open for a perfectly timed punch that sent him to the canvas. Incredibly, he rose to his feet but was in no condition to be allowed to continue. Bonsante says that Saturday will not only be a chance to prove he still can box with the top guys out there, but also a chance to right where he went wrong in the first fight with Brinkley. By Jesse Kelley and Miranda Sannes

“JungleBoy” Zach Walters retained his Minnesota State lightheavyweight title in Duluth last Saturday with an entertaining unanimous decision victory over Anoka, Minnesota’s Boyd Davis. Walters kept the pressure on “Peek-A-Boo” Davis, outworking the slick 37 year old fighter for the better part of eight rounds. Litzau, Kost Win Tough Split Decisions!
Reports from Fightnews.com

Kost Tops Hernandez!
By Robert Hoffman and Jacob Chavez at ringsideMiddleweight Kenny Kost (9-1, 5 KOs) scored a hard-fought ten round split decision over hometown hero Miguel “Macho” Hernandez (16-3, 9 KOs). Scores were 97-93, 97-93 Kost, 96-94 for Hernandez. More to come.

After the bout I contacted Kost to talk about what had just happened..
“He was a shorter stalkier guy so I pretty much just kept my jab on him.” Said Kost. “He was shorter and tried to get underneath my punches to land haymaker rights and lefts but he wasnt landing much. A few here and there but i pretty much just out jabbed him all night. It was a close fight, I just tried to take it round by round and thats the way it went. He would try to pull it out in the last seconds of the round but we definetly thought we pulled out the fight.”

Litzau: Proving them wrong!
By Ramon Hough

Unbeaten super featherweight Jason Litzau has never been one to let people’s negative opinions hold him back. Litzau, who has built a record of 14-0, with 14 knockouts, still deals with people underestimating him. “Without a doubt, there’s a stigma,” says Litzau’s trainer/manager Bob Van Syckle. “Not only because he is a white kid, but he’s a kid from Minnesota. From the East coast to the West coast, Minnesota guys have a bad reputation.” Tonight at the Pechanga Resort in Temecula, California, Litzau will be taking on possibly his toughest challenge when he takes on John Nolasco (15-3, 6 KOs) in the main event on ESPN2. Bonsante a Contender Once Again
By Tim Hocking

In 2003, only two weeks after knocking out Marris Virgil in the 3rd round in Hinkley, Minnesota, Tony “The Bullet” Bonsante took an IBA middleweight title fight on short notice versus Tony “The Bull” Ayala, Jr. The fight was supposed to be a tune-up for Ayala on his way to bigger and better things. Bonsante impressed on national television by battering Ayala and knocking him out in the 11th round.
Bonsante then finally got his long awaited high profile fight on ESPN2’s televised main event when he challenged Peter Manfredo, Jr. for Manfredo’s NABO crown. Bonsante lost convincingly to Manfredo and many speculated what the future would hold for the then 33 year-old fighter.
His future at a crossroads, Bonsante would come to gain his biggest exposure yet by becoming a contestant on the NBC hit reality show “The Contender” staring Sugar Ray Leonard, Sylvester Stallone, and produced by Mark Burnett (“The Apprentice” and “Survivor”). Love it or hate it, there is no disputing the exposure “The Contender” provided Bonsante. Bonsante went from being an aging Minnesota fighter with a questionable future to a very marketable “34 year old prospect”. Minnesota Boxing caught up with Bonsante about his experience on “The Contender” and his future plans. For the full interview CLICK HERE. 7/7/05

Lynch now has a record of five wins and one loss, two wins by knockout. His first professional fight was ruled a no contest after an accidental headbutt forced a premature ending to the bout. Bonsante losses to Smith in Vegas

Anthony Bonsante lost a five round unanimous decision to Contender rival Ishe Smith today at Cesars Palace in Las Vegas. Smith boxed well and connected with the harder shots early particularly the lead left hook. Bonsante did his best work to the body of Smith. By the fourth round Bonsante looked angry and frusterated from trying to box with Smith and started in with the roughem up tactics. Bonsante had a point taken away for rabbit punching in the fourth and a two point deduction in the fifth for almost suplexing Smith! Bonsante continued to try to make the fight a brawl in the final round. Smith boxed a good round but Bonsante was pressuring him and had his opponent on the run in the second half of the round. The final scores were 49-43 an all cards. 5/24/05

“STEEL” WILL’S COMEBACK
By: Ramon Hough

“Steel” Will Grigsby is no stranger to making history.
In 1998, “Steel” Will Grigsby (17-2-1, 7 KO’s) became the first Minnesota fighter since right after World War I to win a world title belt. His title-winning fight was also the first time a Minnesota boxer had even fought for a title since Scott LeDoux (knocked out in the 7th round) lost to Larry Holmes for the heavyweight title in 1980.
This Saturday May 14th, after spending more than one year in prison and a total of two and a half years away from the ring, Grigsby will be looking to add his name to an elite group of fighters as he faces Jose Victor Burgos (36-13-3, 21 KO’s) of Mexico for the IBF Light Flyweight title (108) on the undercard of the Felix Trinidad/Winky Wright pay-per-view fight card. By Jesse Kelley

” IT FINALLY HAPPENS” Mn state featherweight champ “The Wild Irishman”Darby Smart (8-0) will defend his title against “The American Boy” Allen Litzau (7-1) in an 8 round main event Saturday June 4th at CR’s Sports bar & billiards in CoonRapids. This bout has been in the works for a while now and things have gotten personal between the two Minnesota featherweights. “All the talk started back on April 9th of 2003.” Said Litzau.” I offered him a fight and he turned it down. Then after he beat Antonio Baltierez he started calling me out in front of everyone and I said I would fight him. To make a long story short, If I lose to this guy I will retire! He is going to be a nice 8-0 record on my resume. I dont want to make it sound like he’s a bad fighter because he’s not. He is tough, he’s just not tough enough for me. He said I dont hit hard but he will see how hard I hit on June 4th.” Smart, who also seemed confident, talked about the rivalry that has developed between the two. “I honestly dont know how this all started. Mr. Litzau likes to talk alot and I dont. I believe you should leave it in the ring. This fight is personal and I want to put him in his place.”
The undercard is also stacked with great Minnesota matchups. Scott Ball (5-0) vs. Joe Lynch (5-1) is the main supporting bout and should be a great fight. Also, Jason Aacker (8-4) vs. Kenny Kost (7-1), Boyd Davis vs. Joe Lorenze, Dan Schlienz vs. Brian Jackson. Walters, who is trained by Buddy McGirt and Chuck “Sharky” Horton, controlled the fight with his superior punch rate and accuracy, but Sanders always seemed to be one punch away from turning the fight around. The judges scored the bout 80-72, 79-73 and 80-73. All in favor Walters.

“JUNGLEBOY” Zack Walters: Homecoming
By Ramon Hough

“Jungle Boy” Zach Walters (10-1, 9 KO’s) fought his first three professional fights in his hometown of Duluth. But Walters, who is a student at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, has been fighting on the road since then. Much has happened in the light heavyweight’s’ career in the two-plus years since that last fight: In September of 2004, he knocked out Marty Lindquist to become the Minnesota State Light Heavyweight champion. A few months later, Walters sparred with the then World Light Heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver. The result: James “Buddy” McGirt signed on to be his co-trainer alongside Chuck “Sharky” Horton. On Saturday May 7th, Walters will be making his ring-return to Duluth when he takes on Jesse “Iron Jaw” Sanders in the main event of the “Truth in Duluth” fight card at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC).

Troy Lowry: Another Opportunity
By: Ramon Hough

It’s been said that sometimes you lose, but in the end, you really win. After his latest fight, Troy “TNT” Lowry (26-4, 16 KO’s) can probably relate to that saying. On March 11th, Lowry challenged Matt “the Predator” Vanda for the Minnesota junior middleweight title. In a very close and controversial fight, the three judges awarded Vanda a unanimous decision. After the fight, Lowry felt he’d been robbed and the wrong fighter was given the decision. “My performance was great. I thought I won it,” Lowry said. “I don’t care what anybody says. I feel good about it.”
One month later, Lowry’s feelings haven’t changed and he still disagrees with the decision. But what could be seen as a setback has actually become a set-up for another big opportunity. This Saturday, Lowry is moving up in weight to fight Minnesota middleweight champion Chris Holt (11-4, 8 KO’s) in the main event of the Ballroom Blitz at the RiverCentre in St. Paul. The bout will be televised by Fox Sports North. READ MORE 4/15/05

Catching Up With Welterweight Mohammed Kayongo
By:Ramon Hough

Three months ago, Mohammed Kayongo (11-1-1, 8 KO’s) was an undefeated prospect trying to establish himself as a legitimate young contender. Kayongo was scheduled to fight another undefeated prospect, Shamone Alvarez, in his second fight on Showtime’s ShoBox series. Alvarez jumped on Kayongo right away and knocked him out in the first round. It was a disappointing loss for Kayongo, but he says he’ll be a better fighter because of it.
Kayongo spoke to Minnesota Boxing at the weigh-ins for the Grover Wiley/Luciano Perez and Zach Walters/Mike Wood fight card. We would like to thank Kayongo for taking the time to talk about that fight, what he learned from it and when we should expect to see him back in the ring. Read More

By: Ramon Hough

James “Buddy” McGirt’s boxing career has been about maximizing potential: his own and the fighters he now trains. As a fighter, McGirt was a two-time world champion who won more than 70 fights. He even knocked future Hall-of-Famer Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker to the canvas in their second of two fights. As a trainer, McGirt has helped Arturo Gatti rediscover his boxing ability, tone down his brawling ability and win another world title. He also guided Antonio Tarver to a 2nd round knockout over the great Roy Jones, Jr.With all of his success with big-names, McGirt still prides himself in helping young, undiscovered talent be their best and accomplish their dreams. His new project is a 24-year-old light heavyweight from Duluth, Minnesota. McGirt has travelled to Minnesota to join Walters for his bout with Mike Wood at the RiverCentre in Saint Paul Friday night. A few months ago, Zach “Jungleboy” Walters was asked to be a sparring partner to Antonio Tarver, who was preparing to fight Glencoffe Johnson for Light Heavyweight supremacy. Jungle Boy Speaks Out!
By Ramon Hough

“Jungleboy” Zach Walters’ (9-1, 8 KO’s) career has undergone major changes over the last few months. Not long ago, Walters was asked to be a sparring partner to Antonio Tarver, who was preparing to fight Glencoffe Johnson. After three weeks of sparring, Walters went from being one of Tarver’s sparring partners to being a fellow pupil under trainer Buddy McGirt. McGirt, a former world champion, may be best known for guiding Antonio Tarver to a KO win over Roy Jones, Jr and Arturo Gatti’s re-invention from fading brawler into a world champion boxer-puncher. This Friday, Walters is looking to take his first step under McGirt and establish himself as a legitimate young contender in the light heavyweight division. Walters spoke to us via email interview. Kenny Kost: A Chance at Gold
By: Ramon Hough and Jesse Kelley

Over the last six months, three Minnesota fighters have had opportunities to enhance their reputations in televised-bouts. But all three were beaten convincingly: Matt Vanda was knocked out by Armando Velardez on Showtime in August; Wayne Martell was down five times in a TKO loss to Zab Judah on a pay-per-view show in October; and Mohammed Kayongo was on the wrong end of a 1st round knockout on Showtime in November. This Thursday, White Bear Lake’s “KO” Kenny Kost (8-0, 5 KO’s) is hoping to break that trend and make a name for himself against 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward (1-0, 1 KO) on Fox Sports Net’s Best Damn Sports Show Period.
“Not an hour goes by during the day that I don’t think about (the fight),” Kost said. But Kost also says that the pressure is really on Ward. “My biggest edge is that I have nothing to lose. (Ward) does, he has a lot of money behind him,” said Kost. “I have my whole life outside of boxing. Boxing is all he’s got, so I’m going to go in there with all I’ve got, like I do in every fight.” FOR FULL STORY CLICK HERE

RiverCentre Boxing Update

The Brunette’s boxing series at the RiverCentre in Saint Paul, MN continues on February 18th. This show will be the first of five television dates being showcased on Fox Sports North. The show will be a Pro-Am. Grover Wiley (27-5-1, 13 ko’s) of Omaha, Nebraska will meet Chicago, Illinois welterweight prospect Luciano Perez (11-1,10 ko’s) in a ten round main event. This will be Grover’s sixth time fighting in front of a Minnesota crowd. In April of 2003, Wiley stopped Homer Gibbins in the fifth round at the National Guard Armory in Saint Paul, MN. Perez is looking to stay in the win column following his lone loss to undefeated Juan Buendia in a fight that some say should be the fight of the year in Chicago for 2004. Also being featured in an eight round television bout will be the Minnesota state light heavyweight titleholder Zach Walters (9-1, 8 ko’s) of Duluth, MN. Walters has recently joined up with world-class trainer Buddy Mcgirt. Walters will take on Mike Wood (12-2-1, 7 ko’s) of Saint Louis, MO. Other local talent including Tony Grygelko, Ben Dayee and Hassan Wasswa will also be featured. Dave Bontempo will be doing the blow-by-blow commentating. Bontempo has broadcast fights on Espn, TVKO, Showtime, and Fox Sports. Amy Hayes will return to do all of the ring announcing. Smart Wins Minnesota State Featherweight Title!
By Jesse Kelley

The Acr Boxing club hosted a “A Fight Night in Fridley” last night at the Minnesota Sports cafe in Fridley, Mn. Duluth’s Darby Smart picked up the vacant Minnesota State featherweight title by winning a unanimous decision over Shakopee’s C.B. Bunkholt. Smart landed the harder, cleaner punches but Bunkholt showed his toughness by staying in the mix through the six rounds. Smarts best weapon in the fight was the straight left but it was a right hand to the head that put Bunkholt down nearing the end of the first round. It would be the only knockdown of the fight. Bunkholt had some good moments himself in the fight but he only really seemed to bring his best after being rocked. To Bunkholt’s credit, he took some hard shots and kept coming. The last few rounds were all action. The final scores were 60-53, 60-53, and 59-53 for Smart. For full report Click Here 12/19/04

Litzau Wins, Corn Losses This Weekend
From FightNews.com

Undefeated Jason Litzau, 130, of St. Paul MN stopped Juan Suazo, 131, of Tuscon, AZ at 2:59 of the sixth and final round of a super featherweight bout. Litzau (13-0, 13 KO) is a cutie in the mold of Paul Spadafora, and has a nice left hook which no doubt played a part in his perfect record. Litzau dominated the first two rounds with superior boxing and faster hands, but Suazo fought his way back into the bout in the next two rounds. Bleeding from several nicks, Suazo (7-3-2, 5 KOs) landed enough right hands to fend Litzau off to narrowly win rounds three and four. Litzau was back in round five, boxing, moving, and landing bolo punches that befuddled Suazo. Round six was all Litzau, as he hammered Suazo with left hooks, right hands, and right-left combinations. A double left hook near the end of the round sent Suazo back into the ropes, where referee Randy Neumann waved things off. — Rick Scharmberg

Fighting at middleweight, highly touted Anthony Thompson scored an impressive fourth round knockout over J.J. Corn. Thompson dropped Corn twice in round four with flush left-right combinations to earn the KO win at 2:14.–Herman Patton

Litzau’s eight-round fight is not scheduled to appear on television. But Van Syckle says Litzau’s fight may get airtime if one or both of the co-features don’t go the distance. Whether the fight’s on television or not, Van Syckle expects Litzau to be tested by Suazo, who has never been stopped. “(Suazo) is a young, hungry fighter,” he said. “He is a strong puncher who goes to the body.” The fights take place this Friday, December 3 at Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
