ANTONIO WOODS SEEKS 12TH VICTORY THIS FRIDAY!
28 year old Tony Woods (11-0), who resides in Shoreview, MN returns to the ring after a career long, 10-month layoff this Friday, May 5th at the River Center in Davenport, Iowa. Woods will face tough Missouri native Jarvis Williams (9-7) in a rematch bout. The two boxers met in 2021 at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN with Woods earning the unanimous decision win. Woods suffered a bad cut over his left eye in the bout which cutman Jesse Garza controlled well.
A big fight in Florida against a 19-1 boxer fell through recently so Woods and his team are looking to get busy in hopes of another big fight offer if things go well on Friday.
“This camp has been long but strong as always” said Woods. “I’ve been off 10 months which has been my longest layoff to date and I can’t wait to be back under the lights in the squared circle. As for my opponent, this is my first rematch in the pro ranks. Jarvis Willams is a tough journeyman opponent and took everything I could dish out in our first fight which was a back and forth fire fight that ended in a unanimous decision victory for me. I’m expecting nothing less from him this go around. As always I’m more focused this time out and I’m looking to show my growth coming off my layoff and close the show on May 5th in dramatic fashion.”
“With that said hopefully a victory on Cinco De Mayo puts me and my team in a position to lock in a bigger name fight on a bigger platform, but only time will tell.”
Tony Woods
Woods’ manager Erik Hinderaker of 1-2 Boxing believes Woods is on the verge of something big after this fight.
“We had a big fight lined up in Florida but the opponent (19-1) backed out, so we opted to take a fight in Iowa to get Tony into the ring for the first time in 2023” said Hinderaker. “The fight in Florida was actually a 10 rounder, so I would expect Tony to be fighting 8 and 10 round fights going forward and looking to climb up the ladder as fast as we can. Tony is ready to make a move, so we’ll take care of business this weekend, get to 12-0, and then look for another big opportunity as soon as possible.”
Boxing in the main event is 21 year professional boxing veteran Gilbert Venegas (19-36-5, 8 KO’s) of Davenport, Iowa. Venegas, 46 faces undefeated Travis Thomas (10-0) in the main event bout of the evening. Venegas has tested many Minnesota boxers over the year including Woods’ head coach Corey Rodriguez (2013), Bobby Butters (2001), Mohammed Kayongo (2013), Rondale Hubbert (2015), DeLorien Caraway (2016, 2017). Up for grabs in both the main and co-main bouts will be the AlienBoi Latino belts.
