BOXING: HUBBERT, GUAMAN WEEKEND RESULTS

Former MN State super lightweight champion Rondale Hubbert of Minneapolis and Minnesota ranked featherweight Gavino Guaman of River Falls, WI had big-time fights last Saturday on the road.

Rondale Hubbert (now 11-6-1, 7 KO’s) lost a hard-fought unanimous decision over eight rounds to Manuel Lopez (now 13-2-1, 6 KO’s) of Denver at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. It was the co-featured bout of the evening and promoted by Sparta Combat League. Not many details are out there but ringside fans described the fight on social media as being action packed and and good showing by both fighters. Hubbert says that the video will be available this weekend.

“It was a good fight”, said Hubbert. “I was affected by the altitude but it was a war.”

27-year-old Gavino Guaman (now 5-3, 1 KO) was stopped in his ESPN televised bout at :36 of round three by former Olympic gold medalist Robson Donato Conceicao.

Guaman made the fight close with the highly accomplished Brazilian in the opening round. He showed a tight defense, a good jab, and his trademark overhand right was working. Conceicao looked physically bigger and his skills took over the fight after round one. Guaman weighed in nearly 3 pounds less than his opponent and looked even smaller during the fight. Despite this, Guaman showed incredible heart after taking huge shots from Conceicao. Guaman was dropped four times throughout the fight but continued to fight. The referee however stopped the fight after the final knockdown when Guaman was looking hurt and unsteady.

Both Rondale Hubbert and Gavino Guaman appear to have important fights set for later this August in Minnesota. Details will be released next Monday.
