BOXING: JAMAL JAMES READY TO ANNOUNCE TITLE FIGHT
Minneapolis welterweight contender Jamal “Shango” James (26-1, 12 KO’s) will release a major announcement this Thursday, Feburary 20th at a press conference being held at the MNPLS Armory. Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) and Fox Sports have confirmed that James will meet highly ranked veteran Thomas Dulorme (25-3-1, 16 KO’s) of Puerto Rico in the night’s main event. The showdown will be for the WBA’s interim welterweight title and takes place on April 11th, 2020 at the Minneapolis Armory.
Also joining James at the press conference and fight night will be David Morrell Jr. who will box in a featured bout. Morrell Jr., is a native of Cuba now with his training base in Minneapolis at The Circle of Discipline. A second WBA World title bout will be announced as well with the action being televised Nationally on FS1. This will be the first of four televised boxing cards coming to the Armory in 2020.
In his last fight at the Armory in July of 2019 the 31 year-old James defeated veteran Antonio DeMarco by unanimous decision. It was another entertaining performance from James who has been thrilling Minnesota boxing fans since the age of 5 in the ring.
“Demarco was definitely a tough opponent” James told Minnesota Fight News. “He definitely came to bring it. But we were prepared. We are always training. You never know when you’re going to get the call. And I think we really gave a great show. When I re-watched the fight, I realized how fun it was for everybody. It seemed to be a really action packed fight. I got a lot of positive feedback afterwards. Obviously it’s a blessing to be able to be fighting at home with the cameras and everything. Especially in a beautiful venue like the armory. So that was awesome. And then to be the main event against a big name opponent like DeMarco and come out the victor was just perfect.”
The news of the fight against Dulorme has been circling for a few weeks. When we spoke with James a few days ago, those details were not yet finalized so he was not at liberty to discuss details. He did however drop a few hints of what could be coming. Those details will become official this Thursday as we expect James to announce the WBA Welterweight title fight against Dulorme.
” I feel extremely blessed” said James. “I feel like we’re making boxing huge again in Minnesota. I think Caleb Truax really started that when he won his world title. To help make boxing really big on a professional level here is something that I am extremely proud of. They are bringing in talent from all over the world to perform right here in Minneapolis and it’s letting people see our city and what we have to offer. Once everything is solidified, I’m going to promote the heck out of it. I can say they are working on something huge and it’s going to be right here at home at the Armory. I’m going to make sure the whole state and city knows so everybody can come out and have a great time and show some support. I’m going to try to give a great show like I always do.”
