Sona “Slink Proper” Akale looks to extend his winning streak in Iowa after an impressive win there last September. However, Nicholas Compton has other plans. Compton defeated previously unbeaten Danny Huffman of Duluth last January and wants to break Akale’s perfect record as well.

Slink Proper’s real name is Sona Akale which he says originated in Cameroon, Africa where his family is from.

“ I am known as Slink Proper due to to the fact I am also a music artist and most people know me from that” said Akale. “More recently in the last year I have been pin pointed as Slink Proper the boxer and my music supporters have followed me to the boxing world while also still supporting my music and vice versa so its been a nice unexpected cross marketing tool, its unique and I like it”.

Akale, 32 says he has always had an interest in boxing and always had a silent obsession with fighting. Akale first laced the gloves up just before the old Brunette’s Boxing Gym closed it’s doors.

“I had started at Brunette’s Boxing Gym and two weeks later they closed down. A coach at the gym named Ben ‘the Educator’ Lane, the boxing Principal is what they called him. He invited me to train with him in his basement where I began training regularly before his passing. From there I was hooked, no pun intended. I started boxing amateur and was at gyms through the twin cities. I met Scott Tolzmann and he introduced me to “boxing boxing” if you know what I mean. He’s been guiding and helping ever since. Scott knows his sh*t, no joke”.

A fourth round KO win was the result for Akale last September in Iowa. Minnesota boxing fans were able to catch their first glimpse of the music artist turned pro boxer a year ago at The Myth in Maplewood, MN where he stopped his opponent in the second round.

“ Going into the fight, I didn’t know what to expect” said Akale looking back. “I was nervous especially since he had so much more overall professional experience then me. But I was excited at the same time and I knew if I didn’t do it, I would regret it forever. All of that nervousness left as soon as I started walking to the ring. The same feeling of confidence like when I go on a stage to perform came over me and it felt familiar. As soon as I stepped in the ring I was ready to go all the way in, win loose or draw. The feeling after I knocked him down and everyone started cheering was a surreal feeling and I’ve been chasing that feeling every fight since. I can’t lie, it’s ADDICTIVE!”

Akale’s team headed by Coach Quincy, Shane Chanslor and Scott Tolzmann have helped push Akale to what he describes as the next level as he enters the fight versus Compton.

“I know my opponent (Compton) is just coming off a big win. We know that he’s well conditioned and comes to fight so it will definitely be a high volume punching fight. For anything else you will have to see.

When Nick Compton met Danny Huffman last January in Minneapolis, he was an accomplished mixed martial artist transitioning to boxing in the eyes of fans. He was matched tough against Markus Morris five years prior but had not fought since. Compton returned with a bang last year and the victory established Compton as a fan favorite.

“That fight was special because it had been a long time since I had boxed and self belief played a major roll in me pulling out that win. I always look to out work my opponents in training as well. I am ready”.

Despite Akale being unbeaten, Compton will enter the ring tonight as the insider favorite. Akale will try to prove that notion wrong and Compton looks to continue the momentum towards his third professional victory.

I know he’s (Akale) 2-0, hits hard, and likes to come forward. I don’t know much more. We’re both professionals and I expect a good fight”.

Compton told Minnesota Fight News that despite strict Covid restrictions remaining in place across the country, fans will be able to attend the event live. The venue will remain at half capacity and masks will be required. A year out of the ring has Compton ready to return.

Nick Compton’s final shout ousts: “I want to give a shout out to Daleco James for making the trip (to Iowa) with me and the guys at Lyke’s and Wurk gyms for all the good rounds leading up to the fight. Also a big thank you to my family and friends who have stayed tapped in with their support.”

Sona Akale’s final shout outs: “Make sure to follow and join my journey on Instagram @slinkproper and snapchat @slinkproper. Also be sure to Follow i.g. @coachq_training. He’s a high performance trainer so hit him up for details. Finally follow i.g. @element.Gym. That is my gym that I train out of and it’s the greatest gym in Mn. Come check it out”!
