BOXING: WEEKEND RESULTS FROM DULUTH AND NORTH DAKOTA
RESULTS FROM DULUTH, MN
Danny Huffman (now 1-0) of Duluth, MN won a unanimous decision over Fred Thomas (1-16) of Davenport, IA on Saturday night at the DECC in Duluth, MN. Both men traded punches for four rounds with Huffman securing a tough win by out-landing Thomas. Thomas used his veteran savy to lure Huffman into his power shots at times but the Minnesotan was able to withstand the Iowan’s punches, answer with his own, and earn a gutsy unanimous decision win.
Giezwa Hobbs (3-0) of Saint Paul, MN swept all four rounds against California’s Ray Chacon. Hobbs was on target, speedy, and sharp throughout the fight as he went the distance for the second time against the durable Chacon. Scores read 40-36 on all three judges cards. Hobbs is scheduled to box on November 3rd in Georgia alongside Minnesotan Javontae Starks.
Lydell Rhodes (27-3, 12 KO’s) of Las Vegas, Nevada stopped Demetrius Wilson (2-10) of Missouri in round four. Wilson was awkward and stuck with Rhodes despite the gap in experience. Rhodes turned things up in the final round however and ended the fight with a body shot KO at 1:56 of the fourth.
Saint Cloud, Minnesota’s Joe James (2-0, 2 KO’s) stopped Mark Slyter (1-3) of Gardner, Kansas at :53 of the second round. James showed again why he is a local prospect to watch as he picked apart his game opponent. Slyter came to fight but was outclassed by James. James officially scored two knockdowns in the fight although at least one other exchange could have been counted. The end came when James landed a number of unanswered punches on the ropes where the fight was stopped.
