BOXING: WEIGH-IN PHOTO REPORT FROM THE MNPLS ARMORY

Jamal James and Antonio DeMarco both made weight earlier today at the Armory in Minneapolis. The welterweight main event is scheduled for 10 rounds of action. Minneapolis’ Jamal James was greeted by cheers as he stepped on the scale second at 145.8 pounds. Despite moving up in weight, DeMarco was the heavier of the two at 147.6 pounds. This will be DeMarco’s fifth fight having weighed in at 145 pounds or higher in his 41 career professional bouts. James has only fought below the welterweight limit a handful of times as a pro. James stands about four inches taller but the southpaw DeMarco has  a one inch reach advantage according to Boxrec.com.

The biggest disappointment of the day came after Celso Ramirez’ opponent failed to make weight for their six round bout. Ramirez made weight but Philadelphia’s Vincent Floyd hit the scales 8 pounds over. Floyd and his team wanted to cancel on the spot but Ramirez wanted to fight. Floyd was given time to attempt to shed two pounds but came back two hours later weighing heavier than his first attempt. Ramirez told MN Fight News that he will be staying in fight shape in case he is offered a spot on the PBC Minneapolis Armory show in August featuring Caleb Truax vs. Peter Quillin 2.

With Ramirez’ fight falling out, Ve Shawn Owens is now the lone Minnesota boxer on the show supporting Jamal James. Owens will be moving down a weight class and making his first welterweight showing as a professional. Owens hit the scale at 147.2 pounds while his opponent Juan Garces was heavier at 148.6. Owens appeared to have a significant size disadvantage in his last two fights but matches up physically much more equally with Garces. The 27 year-old Owens is 11 years younger than his world traveled opponent who has 44 pro fights under his belt.
