KICKBOXING: TROY JONES MAKES WEIGHT FOR GLORY TITLE FIGHT
Minnesota’s Troy “Trouble” Jones (13-1, 11 KO’s) made weight earlier today for his welterweight interim title fight against Murthel “The Predator” Groenhart (68-24-3, 39 KO’s) at GLORY 70 LYON this Saturday, October 26. The fight will be shown live on UFC Fight Pass with the main card to begin broadcasting at 1 PM CST. Jones (#4 rated welterweight) versus Groenhart (#3 rated welterweight) will be the main event and takes place in Lyon, France.
Jones took the fight on only 12 days notice after welterweight champion Cedric Doumbé was forced to withdraw after an injury during training camp. The Minnesotan has had an incredible and undefeated run so far with Glory Kickboxing making highlight reels and going 4-0 with the promotion. Jones dismantled The UK’s Ammari Diedrick a month ago at Glory 68 Miami, dropping him three times in the first round before the bout was stopped. The win set Jones into the perfect place to take advantage of this opportunity
” He was a pressure fighter who was coming off an upset victory” said Jones when describing the fight against Diedrick. ” I knew he would keep his guard up high and move forward. So I set up the first Knockdown with the jab and once I had him worried, I switched up levels and went to the body with a hard liver shot. I dropped him again with a cross to body and finally finished him off with jump knee. All in the first round.
“I took about a week off but was back in the gym that Monday” Jones continued. “I was still fit, so I looked at this opportunity as a continuous camp because it literally was. I had a warm up fight that lead to a much bigger opportunity. Honestly not knowing that I was fighting again so soon was better to me because I got a chance to unwind and refresh mentally. Once this opportunity came about I jumped on the chance to stay active. I’ve been training for months now, so I know that I’m physically ready especially after a much needed break.
Murthel Groenhart is the former Glory welterweight champion who is looking to recapture the crown. He is also ultra experienced having fought 95 times as a professional. The winner will likely face Cedric Doumbé in a future bout.
” I expect him to come to fight” said Jones. “I believe wholeheartedly that I will become world champion on Saturday. I’m a KO artist and If I see an opportunity to take him out early I will. The world will see how dominate regardless of it’s a KO or a 5 round dominate performance. I’m ready for it all. My biggest battle is always against myself. It doesn’t matter what my opponent wants to do, he has to deal with what I’m going to do. In the eyes of many I am the underdog. I don’t see myself that way. I know what I’m capable of and the world will recognize my greatness Saturday.
“I’ve been working for 6 years for this moment and championships aren’t won, they are taken. I plan on taking this belt home with me.”
Tomorrow’s preliminary bouts will begin at 11 AM Central Standard Time on Glory Kickboxing’s Youtube Page Here. The main card will be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass Here at 1 PM Central Standard Time. Jone vs. Groenhart will be the final bout of the evening.
