Marty Lindquist and Rick Anderson Eye History Making Showdown
Long time and likable Minnesota boxing and fight figures Marty “The Wolfman” Lindquist and “Rumble Boy” Rick Anderson will attempt to make a number of amazing historical marks when they meet as agreed by both men this year in the professional boxing ring. At 54, Lindquist currently holds the Minnesota state record as the oldest active boxer having competed professionally in our deep rooted local prize ring. He sits tied at number 4 on the all time oldest active boxer list in the world with legends Roy Jones Jr. and Oliver McCall.
On the world scale, Anderson, 65, would be punching for his chance to become the oldest professional boxer ever. That record currently belongs to Steve Ward of the UK. According to Guinness World Records, Ward was 64 when he boxed 50 year old Adrian Parlogea in 2021 before retiring.
A second world record of combined ages in a boxing match would be broken by six years if Lindquist and Anderson met.
Lindquist has a professional boxing record of (16-12, 12 KO’s) and a kickboxing record of (29-6, 18 KO’s). He was the Karate International Council Light-Heavyweight champion from 1997-1999 and the North American light-heavyweight champion from 1995-1997. Anderson has boxed in 2 exhibitions, winning both but is well known for kickboxing/muay thai with a combined record of (37-8) and being former Minnesota and Southern California champion as well as US Champion. The two fighters are long time friends and have even worked together cornering and giving fighters instructions but this is boxing and both Lindquist and Anderson are running full speed toward the opportunity to punch each other out in front of a large crowd before going back to being friends.
The backstory of how the match up came to be goes like this: Jake Wegner and I had recently determined through deep research that Lindquist owns the Minnesota state record for oldest active pro boxer. Shortly after the discovery, Ron Peterson had let me know during a conversation that Rick Anderson had secured a boxing license and was seeking a match. I presented the idea of a fight to Marty because of how much sense it made and from there, Marty checked with his coach James Clark. Clark contacted Anderson who also agreed to match up. It was most recently discussed that the two would meet this March or later this Summer in Iowa but Anderson believes that the fight should happen in Minnesota where friends and family can attend and cheer the two on.
“I love Marty and love this fight!” Exclaimed Anderson. “I think it is a fun opportunity for us and the fans. That is why it needs to happen in Minnesota. I’ve known Marty for a long time and we have always been friends but we will be trying to knock each other out and then hopefully we can go back to being friends. There are local promoters willing to do it here so let’s make it happen”.
“They won’t even need to make sure our mouth guards are in” Anderson continued, poking fun at his and Marty’s ages. “We will just take our false teeth out before the fight!”
“Rick and I are set to fight and I am really excited!” Said Lindquist a few weeks ago when a match was first being discussed. “I remember when he moved here a while back and he was a really good kickboxer from California. We were supposed to fight but never did. Now we get the chance and I am ready.”
“I’m excited to be the oldest Minnesotan with a pro boxing victory and James Clark pointed out that if he wins, he will take that distinction from me. This is war!” Said Lindquist.
