UPDATE: MENGISTU ZARZAR LOOKS TO EVEN SCORE WITH CUNNINGHAM TONIGHT

  • UPDATE: Mengistu Zarzar lost by split decision to Billy Cunningham in his bid to even the score. It was another close battle heading into the third. Zarzar was winning the third but was had two points taken by the ref for throwing a shot on the break (without a warning). A clash of heads dropped Cunningham in the round which was not counted and appeared to put Cunningham down with a shot which was ruled a slip later. The fourth round was clear cut won by Zarzar and both fighters hurt each other in the fifth. Zarzar again appeared to land a glancing shot that put Cunningham down in the sixth which was not ruled a knockdown. Cunningham was warned five times in the bout for pushing off but no pooinds were taken. Wild and heavy shots were landed by both as the final round came to a close. Final scores read 57-54 for Zarzar and 56-55, 5

The 39-year-old, two-time MN state light heavyweight title challenger Zarzar (10-8-1, 8 KO’s) lost a six-round majority decision to Cunningham (9-39-1) a month ago and immediately sought out the rematch as soon as possible. Believing that he was robbed in the bout and others, Zarzar told MinnesotaBoxing.com that this will be his farewell bout and that he will announce his retirement from boxing after knocking out Cunningham tonight.
