Building on what promises to be a sizzling summer of boxing action in Minneapolis, hometown heroes David Morrell Jr. and Jamal “Shango” James will take questions from the media this Thursday, July 8, at The Armory.
Minneapolis native James (27-1, 12 KOs) will reveal plans for his next fight. Morrell (5-0, 4 KOs), a native of Cuba now living in and fighting out of Minneapolis, will discuss his spectacular first-round knockout win at the Armory on June 27.
Also appearing at the media event will be University of Minnesota wrestler Gable Steveson, a national champion, big-ten champion and qualifier for Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics. A dominating heavyweight, the 21-year-old is the reigning Pan American Continental Champion and recently was recognized as the 2021 winner of the Dan Hodge Trophy awarded to the nations best college wrestler.
On Saturday, Aug. 7, the Armory will host a highly anticipated showdown between unbeaten super welterweight contenders Gabriel Maestre (3-0, three KOs) and Cody Crowley (19-0, nine KOs).
The Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card, which will be televised on FOX, further establishes the Armory as a go-to place for high-profile boxing events. Headliners Maestre and Crowley are rising stars with world championship aspirations.
Maestre, from Barcelona, Venezuela, turned pro in 2019 after a decorated amateur career. The Venezuelan represented his country in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and other international competitions. In his most recent fight, Maestre needed just 38 seconds to stop his opponent.
Maestre faces a tough test in the person of Crowley. A native Canada now fighting out of Las Vegas, Crowley is coming off a one-sided decision over Josh Torres (22-6-2) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
