MMA: Girtz Battles Jury At Bellator 239, Lee Fight Off

UPDATE: Myles Jury def. Brandon Girtz via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28). Read the full recap HERE.

Bellator veteran Brandon Girtz (16-8) of Wyoming, MN (now residing in Colorado) will face former UFC contender Myles “Fury” Jury (17-5) in a featured bout this Friday night at the WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Oklahoma. Tomorrow night’s Bellator fight card can be seen live on Paramount Network and DAZN beginning at 8 PM CT.
Saint Cloud, Minnesota’s Bobby Lee was set to face Shamil “The Chechen Wolf” Nikaev (9-0, 8 KO’s) on the undercard before the fight was scratched last week due to visa issues for the Russian Nikaev.

Brandon Girtz and Myles Jury each weighed in earlier today, coming in at 155.1 pounds for the lightweight attraction. Girtz is 8-6 fighting for Bellator and wants to ride the momentum of his last bout into tomorrow night. Last time out almost a year ago, Girtz won an all out war with Bellator regular Saad Awad. Girtz dropped the hammer on more than one occasion but Awad, like Girtz, kept coming until the end.

“I saw his lights go out two if not three times in that fight” Girtz told MN Fight News. “All I can say is Saad is a fricken warrior. I would see him go out and then come back and start swinging on me. It was a hell of a fight and I love going through something like that, because it really shows myself what kind of fighter I am. He didn’t give up and neither did I. To come back from such an injury like I had and to preform like I did in that fight just shows me that I was able to over come the injury that I had.

Girtz was ready to fly to Ireland following the Awad fight for Bellator last September but a torn bicep tendon forced him off the card. Girtz says he is on weight, ready for war, and ready to bring pressure to push the pace against Jury on Friday night.

Bobby Lee says he was expecting the biggest fight of his life and was ready for the challenge against the undefeated Nikaev. Not only is Lee disappointing in missing out on the challenge, but also the big payday. Lee is optimistic that a Ballator fight will still be in his future.

“I’m the most dialed in I’ve ever been” said a dissapointed Lee. “Ben Locken had my nutrition and conditioning on point. Coach’s Chris Cichon helped with my striking and Brock Larson covered grappling. I had all the bases covered. I was truly ready to show the world what I am capable of.”
