MMA: LFA 34 RESULTS, WATLEY RETAINS TITLE

Robert Watley (10-1) retained his LFA lightweight title by outpointing Brandon Jenkins (11-6) over 5 rounds of action last Friday night in Prior Lake, MN. It was a workman like performance for Marylands Watley and an impressive showing of skills for Minnesota’s Jenkins. Watley said he would put his stand up game on display and mix things up with Jenkins in a pre-fight interview. Those plans went out the window early in the first round because Jenkins had the upper hand with his striking and unpredictable arsenal. As a result, Watley switched things up and focussed largely on taking Jenkins to the floor, smothering, and landing punches from the Minnesotan’s guard. Jenkins did a nice job of countering with elbow’s off of his back. He also showed off some acrobatic sweeps to bring the fighters to their feet which offered him a chance to land some of his signature attacks. Watley returned fire standing up but his attacks seemed to be aimed at opening up chances for take downs. He appeared happy to take a few shots to bring the fight back to the ground. In the end, Watley did what he had to do to take the decision victory and retain his title. Despite the loss, it was a solid another solid showing for Jenkins on the LFA stage.
