MMA: MORTENSEN WINS TITLE BY SUBMISSION IN WISC.
30-year-old Bryan “B-Mo” Mortensen of Mankato, MN defeated Brandon Apfel (now 4-2) of Wisconsin by mounted guillotine in Saturday nights main event at the Sevenwinds Casino in Hayward, Wisconsin. It was the second win of the year for Mortensen who improves to (3-0) as a pro. With the win, Mortensen earned the SWB 155 pound title.
Mortensen landed a nice right hand to the head early in round one but was swept to the canvas with a leg from Apfel moments later. Mortensen wrapped guard and attempted to finish the fight with a guillotine from his back but the hometown fighter Apfel pulled free and the fighters traded punches back on their feet. The fight went back to the canvas with Mortensen on his back again moments later. This time the Minnesotan tried to lock in a kimura from half guard. Apfel rained down punches to Mortensen’s side to free himself and the fighters stood up again to exchange hard head shots. Mortensen landed a flying superman punch to the head and scored a takedown after more heated action between the two. From mount, Mortensen secured the fight-ending guillotine at approximately 3:46 of the first round.
Mortensen took the fight five weeks out after filling in for injured Minnesotan Alex Wiggs. In that time, Mortensen dropped from 193 pounds and made weight successfully at 155 pounds. The hard training camp paid off as Mortensen took home the SWB title in his third professional fight.
“I was ready to fight whoever” said Mortensen afterwards. ” He (Apfel) made a mistake trying to grapple me. I’m on a six fight win streak (including amateurs). I can finish a fight on the feet but I’m also quick on the mat. It’s a good up and coming promotion (SWB). If anybody at 155 pounds wants a title shot, call me out!”
