MUAY THAI: “ABSOLUTE WAR” EXPECTED WHEN LEE MEETS VARGAS, SATURDAY

An “ABSOLUTE WAR” is expected in Saturday night’s Muay Thai co-main event between Bobby Lee and Ruben Vargas. That is how both fighters described what fans can expect from their 160 pound Muay Thai pro debuts.
Driller Promotions is set to present an afternoon of Muay Thai followed by a night of MMA this Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Canterbury Parks Expo Center in Shakopee, MN. Over 30 fights in all are expected.

Both bring a well-rounded martial arts background while having trained bobby leeand competed in Jiu Jitsu, boxing, MMA and more. This will be their first professional Muay Thai bout.

“I got into martial arts when I was a kid, watching Georges St-Pierre and Manny Pacquiao. That’s where the dream to be a martial artist and prizefighter came from” said Lee who got his start with coach Brock Larson at Get Sum Athletic Compound which later turned into The Performance Compound. Now Lee trains at Larson’s Start BJJ Academy in St. Cloud and the Cellar Kickboxing Academy in St. Anthony.

” I am looking forward to this fight” Lee continued. I know he’s from Spartan and they are always trained well. 10oz gloves, three-three minute rounds…I’m ready to go. It’s a great card from top to bottom and I think there is going to be a lot of good memories made”.

Born and raised in Northwest Indiana, Ruben Vargas moved to Minnesota a little over five years ago. Upon arrival, Vargas started at Lakes Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing in Forest Lake. A year later, he moved to Spartan Martial Arts.

“When I was about 15, I got into jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, and boxing and really took off with that. I was overweight so I began dieting real hard. I took my first fight in 2010 as a kickboxing fight at 185 pounds. My first MMA fight was in 2011 at 160 pounds. I worked my way down to 145 pounds and really started putting things together and became more of a full mixed martial artist. I won my pro debut by first round submission in 2016 and then deployed for a year. I came back, had a really tough second fight and here I am!”

“I took this fight on two weeks notice and it means a lot to me that this promotion would still reach out to me and put me in such a phenomenal spot with another fighter who’s phenomenal in every respect” Vargas continued. “I’m just excited to get in there and mix it up with another mixed martial artist. ”

“Bobby Lee is a phenomenal fighter. I’ve got a lot of respect for him. Before and after this fight I’ll be a fan of his. The fans can expect an absolute war. I’m ready to throw hands, to hit and be hit. Bobby’s going to be strong and bring the heat like he always does. One thing I’m notorious for is I never go backwards. I’m always moving forward. We’re going to throw hands at each other and mix it up real nice.”
