~Tolzmann’s Twin Cites Boxing will open it’s doors for the first time tonight (Monday, January 29th). Gym hours will be (4:30-7:30, M-Thur. & Fri-Sun by appt.) Coaches include Owner Scott Tolzmann along with “Irish” Danny Morgan. The gym is located at 2211 37th Ave. N. Mpls, Mn 55412. 
Detroit Lakes’ Chris Holt (12-7) will travel to Winnipeg, MB to battle Canadian Larry Sharpe (16-4) this Friday, January 26th. The fight will be part of a boxing/mixed martial arts show at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
There is always a certain excitement when heavyweights fight on a boxing card. Minnesota boxing fans will have the chance to see two up and coming MN heavyweight prospects in Raphael Butler and Joey Abell fight in seperate bouts tonight at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Butler, who returned from training camp in Colorado last week says that he is excited to showcase his talents to the Twin Cities. Butler discussed his opponent, his thoughts on Joey Abell, and more..
The fight card has been dubbed “Bad Blood”, and as the biggest show in recent Minnesota boxing history approaches, Matt “The Predator” Vanda showed there is definitely “Bad Blood” between himself and Anthony Bonsante.
Anthony Bonsante faces Matt Vanda Friday at the Target Center in Minneapolis Minnesota in what is billed as “Bad Blood;” however, Bonsante says he doesn’t have a personal vendetta against Vanda, but Vanda will lose because of a lack of skills to compete on his level. Throughout his career, Bonsante, 28-8-3 (17 Ko’s), has fought decent fighters like: Tony Ayala Jr., Peter Manfredo Jr., and Ishe Smith, but by his own admission, other boxers have more talent, however, Bonsante says Vanda’s not one of them. “I don’t see it as bad blood. I view it as the Contender verses the Pretender.” He adds, “If you look at his [Vanda’s] fights, a lot of them have been in Saint Paul and he’s gotten the hometown decision. Unfortunately for Vanda, he’s only known in the state and he doesn’t have the national exposure.” 
In a fight which would have launched Jason Litzau on the journey to a title match, things didn’t play out the way the young featherweight prospect would have liked. Dropped in the 1st round by a right hand Litzau fought back winning the next 7 rounds with speed and sheer boxing ability. Litzau was compelled to trade with Hernandez in the eight and was stopped..
Jason Litzau will be fighting on HBO on December 16th. On Tuesday, Yarusso’s Restaurant will host the first press conference announcing the fight. For details

It was a successful weekend on the road for our Minnesota fighters. Marty Lindquist 13-4 shocked Philadelphia fans earlier tonight by crushing hometown favorite Max Alexander now 12-1 in the opening seconds of the 1st. Alexander came out showboating and was caught with a huge overhand right that put him out cold 5 seconds in. Alexander was carried out on a stretcher and left in an ambulance. Official time was :10 of the 1st rd.

Canadian Cruiserweight Bobby Gunn (16-2, 13 ko’s) picked up the IBA cruiserweight title on Saturday night at the LCO Casino in Hayward, Wisconsin. Gunn used his superior boxing skills, a vicious body attack, and some borderline dirty tactics in stopping Shannon Landberg (58-12-3, 26 ko’s) of West Lafayette, IN.

Although Lee has not boxed since engaging in MN’s version of Halger vs. Hearns with Rodriguez at Upper Cut Gym on May 20th 06, Lee’s letting it be known that his win is a message to other boxers in the Lightweight to Welterweight division that his performance against Rodriguez is just a sampling of things to come in the future. 
11 yr old Justice Love’s workoust are so intense, an onlooker could easily get tired from watching him. On the surface, Justice’s workout looks similar to other boxers: he hits the heavy bag, skips rope, and shadow boxes. But what’s different about his workout is his parents are right by his side- not as observers, but as participants because both his father and mother are amateur boxers. 
Boxing is an odd sport in that it can ask both the professional and amateur similar questions: How hard are you willing to push yourself? What’s your inner strength? Are you able to keep your self-esteem despite setbacks? The sport is more complicated when teens are involved because not only must they contemplate these questions, but they must address other issues as well. But as Alex Luxby prepares for his bout May 6th at the Jr. Olympics in Naytahwaush MN, he’s in a good position because not only isn’t he worried about hypothetical questions, he’s no longer concerned about being the victim of abuse.

Featherweight Jason Litzau continued to roll as he outclassed and punished Debind Thapa tonight in New Jersey. After three rounds of beating, Litzau scored the ko as the bell sounded to end round three. Jason will be fighting next in July on Espn according to trainer Bob Van Syckle. In other action, Allen Litzau dropped a controversial majority decision to Terry Lantz. The bout resembled a wrestling match more then a boxing match throughout the bout with Litzau coming on in the final three rounds. Although Litzau landed more punches, the judges apparently felt that Lantz’s aggression was enough to warrant the decision. Rather then step back and box, Litzau decided to go along with the rough house tactics of his opponent and clinch, grab and tie up right along with Lantz early. “It was very much like the fight with Darby Smart” said Van Syckle. 5/11/06
Litzau’s Headline Tonight!
The American Boys Jason and Allen Litzau will be fighting together on the same card for the first time since April of 2004 tonight in North Bergen, New Jersey. Jason Litzau (17-0, 15 ko’s) will face unorthodox southpaw Debind Thapa (20-5-1, 11ko’s) of Nepal. The 22 year old featherweight is already rated high in most of the boxing organizations outthere, #5 NABF, #9 NABA, #9 USBO,#13 WBA, #27 WBC, and to make it to the top, Litzau said he needs to face all types of fighters which is why he chose to take on the awkward punching Thapa.
Allen Litzau, 24, brings a record of (10-1, 6 ko’s) to the ring tonight as he faces a tough test in Terry Lantz (9-5,6 KO’s) of Florida. I say this because Lantz has a decent chin along with the fact that he has fought as a lightweight and even as high as 141 pounds throughout his career. Their fights should be over around 10pm tonight and I will be contacting them to see how things went so stay tuned!

KOLLE LOSSES TO WARD

2004 Olympic Gold Medalist, Andre Ward (9-0, 5KO’s) remained undefeated by putting his speed and punching power on display to stop the previously undefeated Andy Kolle, (9-1, 7KO’s) by scoring a TKO at the end of the sixth round. Both fighters started out throwing punches early, however Ward really turned up the pressure especially in the later rounds of the fight. Ward was able to land the cleaner punches causing swelling the eyes of Kolle, which prompted the referee, Johnny Callas to stop the fight after the end of the sixth round and before the seventh round could begin. ANDY KOLLE VERSUS ANDRE WARD

In life, golden opportunities don’t come along very often. In boxing, they might come along even less frequently. For undefeated middleweight Andy “Kaos” Kolle (9-0, 7 KO’s), two such opportunities will be within reach this Saturday, April 29th (9:15 PM CST) when he challenges undefeated 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Not only does the Fergus Falls, Minnesota native have an opportunity at being the first to defeat Ward (8-0, 4 KO’s), he’s also getting the opportunity to do so in front of an international audience on HBO’s Boxing After Dark. The bout will be the co-feature to the Acelino Freitas versus Zahir Raheem lightweight title bout.
The 23-year-old Kolle will be Ward’s third opponent from Minnesota. He spoke to Fightnews about his upcoming fight and what he thinks is going to happen.

Walters Gets Off Canvas in First, Stops Muller in Third!

“JungleBoy” Zach Walters survived a first round scare Saturday night in Superior, Wisconsin, and went on to knock out Illinois’ Teddy Muller in the third round.Walters was put down once and given a standing eight count in the opening round but turned the tides in the third round, dropping Muller twice in an exciting lightheavyweight battle. Chisholm, Mn’s “The Wild Irishman” Darby Smart (10-3) won a six round unanimous decision in Illinois against Omar Reyes (2-3) this weekend. Smart chose to mix it up early but got into his groove in the later rounds, taking the decision.
“The American Boys” Jason and Allen Litzau have begun their training camp in Florida for their upcoming fights on May 11th in New Jersey. Allen has been sparring tough fighters Dat Ngyuen and Danny McDermott. Jason is sparring lefty Luis Bolano (41-5) in preparation for his bout against Debind Thapa.

Jungle Boy Back in Action

‘Jungle Boy’ Zach Walters (13-1, 10 KO’s) is one of Minnesota’s most popular fighters. Besides the East Side’s Matt Vanda, Walters might be Minnesota’s biggest draw. But without a Minnesota boxing commission, the normally busy Walters hasn’t fought in almost eight months. The layoff ends though this Saturday, April 22nd, when he faces Ted Muller (17-6-2, 7 KO’s) at the Wessman Arena in Superior, Wisconsin. 2006 Upper Midwest Golden Gloves Championships This Weekend!
The UMGG Championships will once again be held at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, Mn this Friday, April 14th and Saturday April 15th. This years tournament is stacked with very interesting matchups. Tony Lee will square off with Jamal James. At 119, Brad Patrow will battle Derek Winston. Javantae Starks, Michael Faulk and Tyler Hultin meet at 152. Cerreso Fort will box Dewayne Steward at 165. Litzau’s Return To Action May 11th!
Saint Paul, Mn featherweight brothers Jason and Allen Litzau will be fighting on a Main Events promoted card on May 11th at Scheuntzen Park in North Bergen, New Jersey. Jason (17-0, 15 ko’s) will be facing southpaw Debind Thapa (20-5-1, 11ko’s). Thapa, who represented his home country of Nepal in the 1996 Olympics is now fighting out of New Jersey. Allen Litzau (10-1, 6 ko’s) will be facing an opponent to be announced shortly. “The guys are looking forward to putting on a good show on May 11th” said Litzau’s trainer Bob Van Syckle. “It looks like a commission could be formed soon in Minnesota and we are really looking forward to putting on a show there this year.” Main Events has expressed interest in promoting a show in Minnesota featuring Litzau as soon as boxing can be held in Minnesota once a commission is in place.

Hajicek, Smart Win MMA Bouts Last Weekend!
Butch Hajicek promoted his first mixed martial arts show last weekend in front of nearly 3,000 rowdy fans in Grand Forks, ND. Hajicek also fought on the card, stopping skilled kickboxer Dominik Blaze. Blaze tapped out after an accumulation of punches. Hajicek injured his foot in the bout which will force him to miss his upcoming fight with Shay Mobley in Indiana on April 14th. Hajicek says he may be fighting in Georgia on the 28th if things heal up. In other action, former Mn state featherweight champ Darby Smart made his mma debut a successful one by choking out Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling coach Desmond Radunz. 4/4/06
Wayka On Free Live Webcast Tonight!
Jr. Middleweight “Gentleman” James Wayka will Battle Eric Mitchell tonight in South Florida. Wayka originally made the trip as a backup opponent for Said Ouali. As of early this morning it looks like the main event of the webcast will now be the Wayka-Mitchell bout, although this could change. Former heavyweight boxing contender Scott LeDoux and Professional Boxing Referee Mark Nelson testified in sessions last week at the Minnesota State Capitol for the reestablishment of the Minnesota State Boxing Commission. The Weekend Wrap Up!

Boxing fans in Denver were once again treated to an entertaining card put up by promoter Jim “Smitty” Smith as heavyweight Raphael Butler, 257, revitalized his career with a dominant knockout victory over Forrest Neal, 237. The fight appeared to have upset written all over it, as it was in the same ring that Butler first tasted defeat in his eleventh fight. And with Neal promising a knockout victory, many fans were looking forward to a brawl. But the body attack of Butler proved too much for Neal, who appeared to quit after a straight right to the body dropped him to the canvas for the ten count. Referee Woody Kislowski counted out Neal at 52 seconds of the opening round. With the win, Butler improves to 17-2 (13) while Neal (who had half his purse withheld due to his disgraceful performance) dropped to 16-9 (8) with this, his fifth straight knockout loss.
Heavyweight Joey Abell continued to role his way through opponents. Abell, now 5-0,5 ko’s tkoed Cornell Bradbury 1-6-1 at 2:25 of the opening round in Merrionette Park, Illinois. According to Boxrec, the 24 year old Abell has been invited back to fight at The Legendary Blue Horizon in Philadelphia, PA on April 7th.
Also fighting on the same card was Mpls’s Innocent Otukwu (13-7). Otukwu was tko’ed in the third round by Malachy Farrell (12-0) Otukwu was unable to come out for the third round due to an eye injury.

Defying the odds with Determination

When Virgil Hill entered the ring after a 20 month layoff to defeat Valery Brudov (who was 30-0 at the time), most gave him little chance to win; after all, pundits said Hill had ring mileage (50-5-23 KOs), and father-time against him. Hajicek Wins Tonight at the Myth!

“Maddog” Butch Hajicek scored the knockout of the night tonight at the Myth Night Club in Maplewood, MN. Just one week after his boxing match in Fargo, Hajicek returned to the ring only this time to do battle on a full contact cage fighting show. Hajicek dropped his opponent Vern Jefferson to the mat early. Jefferson stayed put on his back as Hajicek proceeded to rain right kicks to the legs of his fallen foe. Jefferson got to his feet only to be greeted with Hajicek’s trademark right to the head which sent him down again. Hajicek rained right hands down onto the head of Jefferson forcing an end to the match in the first round.

Kolle wins, Ward next!

Within minutes of undefeated middleweight Andy ‘Kaos’ Kolle’s sixth TKO victory over Vance Garvey on Saturday in Fargo, North Dakota, ring announcer Greg Lowe announced Kolle is set to challenge 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward in an HBO-televised fight on April 29th. The 23-year-old Kolle will bring a 9-0 record with 7 KO’s into the ring when he faces Ward in April. On the undercard, local 18-year-old high school student Tyler Gould (2-0) had an opportunity many schoolkids can only dream of, a chance to fight the principal. ANDY ‘KAOS’ KOLLE: MARCH MIDDLEWEIGHT MADNESS

Undefeated middleweight prospect Andy ‘Kaos’ Kolle (8-0, 6 KO’s) is going to have a busy night this Saturday (March 4th) at the Civic Center in Fargo, North Dakota. Litzau Stops Carrizales in 2!

Featherweight Allen Litzau of Saint Paul, Mn stopped Tim Carrizales of Wisconsin in the second round Friday, Feb 24th at Mack Daddy’s Entertainment Emporium in Somerset, Wisconsin. Litzau was simply too quick for Carrizales from the start. A hard left-right combination to the head dropped Carrizales toward the end of the first round. By the second, Carrizales wore a confused look on his face as he tried to figure out a way to get himself into the fight. Midway through the second, Litzau dropped another left-right combination to the head of Carrizales that once again dropped him to his knees. As the referee started his count, Carrizales shook his head saying he didn’t want to continue. With the win, Litzau raises his record to (10-1, 6 ko’s) while Carrizales drops to (4-7). Moreno losses decision but gains Respect!
Jose Leo Moreno lost a 10 round unanimous decison last Friday on Espn2 to Lamont Peterson. Going into the fight, Moreno was given little hope of making it out of the first few rounds by the Espn commentators, fans and probably Peterson himself. Many, if not most, boxers look for easy fights after a tough loss…especially if that loss came by way of knockout. St. Paul, Minnesota’s Jose Leo Moreno (12-1, 10 KO’s) isn’t following that path though because he wants to know where he stands as a boxer and he feels easy wins will do nothing for his boxing career.
Just over two months ago, Moreno challenged up-and-coming junior welterweight (140) ‘Mighty’ Mike Arnaoutis. Moreno felt good early, but was quickly knocked out in the 1st round with an apparent punch to the temple. On Friday, February 17th, the 31-year-old Moreno is set to take on another undefeated, up-and-coming young junior welterweight in 22-year-old Lamont Peterson (15-0, 7 KO’s). The bout will be taking place in Peterson’s hometown of Memphis, Tennessee and will be televised on ESPN-2’s Friday Night Fights.

In His Father’s Footsteps

Like most fighters, Mark Nelson was introduced to boxing at an early age. Nelson’s father Denny was an amatuer and professional referee for 38 years officiating bouts for Ken Norton, Felix Trinidad, and Jeff Lacy among others. Denny now retired from officiating, recalls Mark attending fights he refereed. “Mark showed talent [as a potential referee] very early” says Denny who points out that it takes many pro refs years to learn their trade. “Mark had the movements and ring savvy [as an amateur] that couldn’t be taught.” READ MORE

Weekend Results!
Minnesota heavyweight Joey Abell (4-0, 4 ko’s) dismantled Dan Jambor (7-1-1) Saturday night at the Blue Horizon in Philadelphia, PA. Abell dropped Jambor twice in the first round before all was said and done. In the words of Fightnews.com writer Kurt Wolfheimer, Abell landed a “huge left-right combination that had Jambor flying threw the air like a rag doll.” Referee Gary Rosato didnt even bother to count.
Rochester Minnesota’s Scott Ball (7-1) took on prospect Marvin Cordova (8-0) In Pueblo, Colorado Saturday night. Ball, who took the fight on one weeks notice faught with tons of heart but was out gunned by the prospect Cordova. Ball dropped an eight round unanimous decision. Also fighting on the same card in Colorado was Heavyweight Raphael Butler. Butler beat up on 321 pound veteran Ronnie Smith, stopping him in the second round. Butler moves to (16-2, 11kos) while Smith drops to (6-35 6 ko’s). More details can also be found at RMB.

“The guy deserved to win. Boxing is a tool and served its purpose for me” says Will Grigsby former IBF Flyweight champ talking about his recent loss to to Ulises “Archie” Solis on the under card of Judah vs Baldomir.
Grigsby talks as if his title loss were another “bad day at the office” or having the case of the “Monday morning blues.” In fact, Grigsby says there’s no rematch clause with Solis, and as of this writing, he has not contacted Carl King his promoter, for a rematch or even watched the tape of the fight.

Moreno and Ball Sparring Video!

Saint Paul ‘s Jose Leo Moreno and Rochester’s Scott Ball both have very important fights on the horizon. As reported last week, Moreno is getting ready to face his toughest test to date against Lamont Peterson on February 17th in the main event on Espn2 Friday night fights. Ball will be in action on February 11th in Pueblo, Colorado as he faces lightweight prospect Marvin Cordova (7-0, 5kos). I traveled to the White Bear Boxing gym along with Ramon Hough to catch up with both Moreno and Ball. Ramon’s interview with Moreno should be up in the next few days. Minnesota Boxing Update
A lot of big things have been going on since I last posted anything which I apologize for. This coming weekend should be a big one for some of our Minnesota fighters. Featherweight prospect Jason Litzau will test himself once again in front of a large audience. Litzau will be facing Carlos Contreras on Saturday, Jan 28 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. The bout will be on the undercard of the HBO televised Arturo Gatti vs Damgaard fight. From what I hear, Litzau’s fight will be televised over in Britain on HBO but not here in the states.
Minnesotan’s Hassan Wasswa and Ryan Gronvold will be traveling to Chicago this Friday to do battle. Wasswa will face Barbaro Zepeda and Gronvold faces Jose Ortega.

Hajicek Set For Hernandez!

“Maddog” Butch Hajicek is set to face Chicago’s Middleweight champ “Macho” Miguel Hernandez on January 6th in Illinois. Hajicek is coming off the biggest win of his career when he took the Mn state title from Chris Holt back on December 4th in Fargo, ND. Hernandez will be the hometown favorite but Hajicek says the style of Hernandez could play into his favor. Hernandez is a tough brawler who mostly comes forward.
