RESULTS FROM THE GRAND CASINO IN HINCKLEY, MN

Phil Williams (16-8-2, 14 KO’s) lost an eight round unanimous decision to Brian Howard (12-1, 9 KO’s) of Atlanta, Georgia last Saturday night at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, MN. Scores read 79-73, 79-73, 78-74. There was not a lot of exchanges in the fight, with both fighters showing a lot of respect for each others power. Howard won his rounds with a quick and long jab while Williams waited for an opening to counter outside of Howard’s range with his hands low. No significant punch was landed by either fighter although the fight did get heated in the closing seconds of the fight. Williams attacked Howard with ten seconds left in the bout and the two ended up tangled in a corner as the fight came to a close. Williams then shoved Howard and Howard tried to retaliate before being separated by corner men and security.
Afterwards, Howard told the crowd that he had stuck to the game plan which was to use his jab because he knew coming in that he and Williams were both big punchers. Williams said he was frustrated by Howards jab and wished Howard would have mixed it up with him more.

Lorenzo Selectmon (7-1-1, 6 KO’s) of Kansas City, MO upset Ryan Watson (2-1-1, 2 KO’s) of Duluth, MN in the five round co-main event. Final scores read 49-46, 49-45, 48-46.
Both fighters had there moments but Selectmon was more persistent in his attacks despite being dropped by Watson in round three.

Cruiserweight Al Sands (18-2, 16 KO’s) of Duluth, MN stopped Galen Brown (44-35-1) of St. Joseph, MO with a body shot at 1:40 of the first round. Brown came out swinging for the fences but Sands calmly avoided the oncoming punches. A counter right to the body sent Brown to the canvas where he was counted out by referee Mark Nelson.

Joe Amouta (7-1, 2 KO’s) of Minneapolis, MN won a six round unanimous decision over Kenneth Glenn (3-2, 1 KO) of St. Paul, MN in a six round super middleweight bout. Amouta built an early lead after knocking Glenn down in the second round with a right uppercut to the head. Glenn composed himself however in the third and forth rounds. It was an entertaining fight with both fighters finishing strong. Scores read 59-54, 60-53, 58-55.

George Carter Jr (14-2-1, 7KO’s) of Galesburg, IL survived 2 knockdowns and scored one himself in beating Colby Courter (11-8, 9KOs) of St. Joseph, MO in a six round middleweight bout. All three score cards were the same at 57-54, 57-54, 57-54. It was a wild fight with Courter dropping Carter Jr with a head shot straight out of the gate and then again midway through the opening round. Carter got right back into the fight in round two, dropping Courter with a right hand to the head. The fighters traded punches for the rest of the fight with Carter Jr finding his groove in the later rounds.

Delorien Caraway (7-0, 5 KO’s) of Minneapolis, MN won a four round unanimous decision over Matt Murphy (1-5-1, 1 KO) of St. Louis, MO in a welterweight bout. Caraway outworked Murphy with speedy combinations while Murphy was extremely tough as the two put on an amazing four round battle.

Lightweight Nate Rubin (4-0-1, 2 KO’s) of Thief River Falls, MN defeated Bryan Timmons (4-8, 4 KO’s) of St. Joseph, MO by unanimous decision over four rounds of action. The first two rounds featured good back and forth action with Rubin taking full control of the fight with body and head shots by the fourth round. Scores read 40-36, 40-36, 40-36.

Danyelle Williams (2-0, 1 KO) of Owatanna, MN stopped Vinnie Downwind (0-2) of Minneapolis, MN in a heavyweight bout. Williams and Downwind exchanged huge punches on even terms in the opening round. Williams took over from that point as Downwind ran out of steam although he  was able to show his toughness by not backing down. The fight was stopped at :39 into the fourth round after Williams landed unanswered punches to Downwind in a corner.
