TRUAX SEEKS TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO MINNESOTA
Middleweight contender “Golden” Caleb Truax (25-2-2, 15 KO’s) of Osseo, MN returns to action this
Saturday night at the Black Bear Casino in Carlton, MN. Truax will battle Melvin Betancourt (29-3) of The Dominican Republic in a scheduled 10 round main event.
The 32 year old Truax made near by Chicago, Illinois his workshop in 2014 at the UIC Pavillion where he picked up wins against Derek Ennis and Scott Sigmon. Those victories set up a WBA World middleweight title challenge to champion Daniel Jacobs back at the Pavillion in 2015. Although trailing on the scorecards against Jacobs, Truax put forth a spirited effort throughout the fight before being stopped on his feet in the closing minutes of the 12th and final round.
Truax was ready to bounce back from the defeat to Jacobs in September of 2015 with a showdown against respected southpaw Fernando Guerrero but a mix up and issue with Truax’s medicals at weigh-in’s put an end to that fight before it could begin.
Training camp was going smoothly for Truax as he was preparing for this weekends bout against Betancourt but an unexpected emergency medical issue involving his girlfriend and subsequent emergency premature delivery of his now healthy new born daughter almost derailed a second consecutive fight for Truax. But like a scene out of Rocky 2, the situation took a turn for the better and the pair decided together that Truax should resume training to fight.
“Training camp was going great until Monday, Feb 1st, a day that changed my life” said Truax looking back. “My daughter Gianna was born via emergency C-section due to complications that my lady, Michelle was having. I was one CT scan away from pulling out of this fight, but word that Michelle was improving led us to make the decision together for me to go through with the fight. It has been a rough 3 weeks trying to juggle caring for my daughter, girlfriend, and training for a fight, but we’ve found balance with help from our families & friends. Despite the extraordinary circumstances, I will be in top form come February 20th!”
Truax continued, “I am excited to be back fighting in Minnesota for the first time in over 2 years. I had 3 straight fights in Chicago and one scheduled in Florida so it will be awesome to fight in front of all my family, friends, and loyal MN boxing fans up around Black Bear this Saturday night.”
Madison, Wisconsin’s Duarn “The Quiet Storm” Vue (8-0-1, 3 KO’s) and fellow undefeated fighter in Jerren Cochran (11-0, 4 KO’s) will meet in the main supporting bout. Vue is 2-0 at Black Bear, most recently defeating Emanuel Gonzalez (14-2) last October. Cochran has not seen action in nearly two years but says he is ready to re-boot his career with a victory. The bout is scheduled for 8 rounds in the featherweight division.
Minnesota State Super Bantamweight champion Vicente Alfaro (6-4, 1 KO) of Northfield, MN will head back to the bantamweight division to battle undefeated Missouri boxer John Franklin (9-0-1, 4 KO’s). Franklin is currently signed with Minnesota based Seconds Out Promoions, who will be promoting this show.
Duluth’s Trevor Marmon (2-5-1, 2 KO’s) and Florida’s Daniel Placeres (2-0, 1 KO) are scheduled to meet in a 4 round rematch bout at 135 pounds. Placeres won a four round split decision last June in Mounds View, MN in the first meeting. Joe Amouta (3-1) of Minneapolis will meet Deangelo Curtis (2-1) of Brooklyn Park in a 4 round super middleweight contest. Moorhead, Minnesota’s Homar Rios (0-1) will face debuting Gavino Gauman of River Falls, WI in the four round opening bout at 135 pounds.
