Ve Shawn Owens Meets Heriberto Flores In Mexico On Saturday Night, Stream Details Provided In Story
Ve Shawn Owens (14-3, 12 KO’s) of Minneapolis, MN will face a new opponent tonight in Heriberto Flores (10-0, 9 KOs) of Guadalajara, Mexico. His original opponent, Hancel Gonzalez reportedly suffered an injury in the final days leading up to the fight. Gonzalez’ weight has been all over the board throughout his career and he has fought as high as 175 pounds as recently as last year. The undefeated Flores is a more natural welterweight like Owens which will make for a fun main event. Owens, who boxes out of the well known Circle of Discipline weighed in at 147 pounds on the dot on Friday night and told MN Boxing that he believes Flores was a pound lighter at 146 pounds.
Owens says that he found out about the opponent change a day after arriving in Mexico which was a week ago to get acclimated to the altitude. He says that this is the third time he has been in Mexico to train (and now fight) but spent most of camp in Minnesota. The fight and boxing trips to Mexico came to be for Owens in part because of the help and recommendation by former Circle of Discipline teammate Alexis “Alacran Amarillo” Gomez (4-1, 1 KO) who is also set to box on the card tonight against Mario David Salomon in a four round welterweight bout. Gomez boxed amateur out of Minneapolis and picked up two professional wins in Minneapolis before relocating to Mexico City where he has continued his professional career.
“I’ve been studying Flores from the moment they told me his name” said Owens. “I’m expecting an explosive brawler because he has a come forward type style.”

Owens went from prospect to welterweight contender in the eyes of world wide boxing fans and experts following his move back up to 147 pounds and decisive victory over Kudratillo Abdukakhorov (now 20-2) last February at the Armory in Minneapolis. Although it was a huge win, Owens says that the “great performance” is now old news and that he wants to look better each fight. He says that a lot of offers and attention have come as a result of that win and he is planning to keep the momentum rolling on tonight. He is excited to put on a top performance and showing for the Mexico fans.
“One of my teammates back when we were teens offered me to come and check out Mexico City. He (Alexis Gomez) told me there’s so much potential there and his gym would love to work with the Circle. I took the first step, and I was not disappointed. I fell in love with Mexico City instantly. The team here loved my work ethic and personality, and they were willing to put not just me but the Circle on matches.”
