Ve Shawn Owens Fight Stopped In Round 8 In Mexico

Ve Shawn Owens (14-3, 12 KO’s) of Minneapolis, MN had his fight stopped at the end of round 8 Saturday night against Heriberto Flores (now 10-0, 9 KOs) of Guadalajara, Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico. Owens battled back after visiting the canvas in the first but was stunned in the eighth as the referee waived the fight off with the Minnesotan on his feet and in disbelief with the stoppage. After review, Owens says that he was hit twice after the bell at the end of the eighth and that the promoter told him the result will be called a no-contest. Owens had prepared to face Columbian Hancel Gonzalez (11-2) who reportedly suffered an injury in the final days leading up to the fight and Flores stepped in as a replacement earlier this week.

The bout began with the boxers trading on even terms when a looping right hook delivered by Flores glanced off the head of Owens that dropped Owens immediately. However, Owens shot right up on steady legs complaining that the shot was behind his head. Owens pumped the jab in round two and Flores held a tight guard. Owens was able to avoid the brunt of the hard shots delivered by Flores.

Owens had his best round in the fourth being the busier boxer of the two and landing more punches, particularly hard body blows that stood out. Rounds five and six were close but Flores was less busy and focused on countering Owens, who came forward like he did for most of the fight. Flores boxed on his toes in rounds seven and eight with more energy and Owens continued to come forward to land his punches.

Owens landed a head snapping left upstairs to Flores in the eighth but was met with a right and some hard head shots. The referee jumped in quickly to waive the fight off. Owens looked on in disbelief at the stoppage and when Flores was announced the winner. Owens says that he was up the cards at the fights and the promoter told him that because the punches came after the bell, the fight will be ruled a no contest.
